Disclosing depression may seem easy. After all, scarcely a day goes by when this celebrity or that one “comes out” as living with depression, or anxiety (two of the socially “acceptable” mental health diagnoses) but, for many people, talking openly about their mental health challenges, whatever those are, isn’t easy; it can be excruciating, and the very thought of being out in the open as someone living with mental illness can be incredibly, well, anxiety-provoking. Miriam Beigelman doesn’t take coming forward lightly, and she talks about this in her brave essay.

Miriam is a Florida based writer and teacher. She got married for the first time in her forties, five years ago, after valiantly fighting to recover from a severe depression in her thirties. She has written many articles for The Jewish Press about her musings about getting married as what is considered an "older single" in her community. She is toying with the idea of returning to work as a therapist where she will use her rich experience in mental health to help her clients.
